Therapeutic style

The therapeutic approach at Hall Counselling is integrative-humanistic, drawing from person-centred, Gestalt, and transactional analysis, incorporating a trauma-informed care approach. This involves providing empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence within the therapeutic relationship, facilitating an environment focused on you, the client.Therapy can explore sensitive and personal areas of life and experience; therefore, trust and transparency within the work are vital.Working within the ACC ethical framework to ensure safe and competent practice.

The Counselling ProcessAt Hall Counselling, the therapeutic journey follows a structured yet flexible approach, ensuring that your needs and goals are at the heart of the work.1. Initial Assessment SessionThe process begins with an initial assessment session, designed to understand your reasons for seeking therapy and gather general background information. This includes:•Current experiences and concerns
•Personal history and past experiences
•Family life and relationships
•Employment and lifestyle
•Personal interests, likes, and dislikes
•Risk and protective factors
•Any current medications
•Previous therapeutic experiences
This session serves as the foundation for understanding your unique circumstances and ensuring that therapy is tailored to your needs.

2. Initial Consultation (Two Sessions)Following the assessment, an initial consultation takes place over two sessions. This phase may overlap with the assessment session; however, its purpose is to explore the general information in greater depth to ensure that we can work safely and competently together. This careful consideration allows us to establish the necessary conditions for therapeutic contact, ensuring that the relationship, when initiated, is appropriate and beneficial for both the client and myself as the counsellor.During this stage, we will also complete essential forms, including:
•Face-to-face counselling contract
•GP consent form
•GDPR consent form
•Initial consultation form
By the end of these sessions, we will have formulated a psychological contract and completed all relevant forms, ensuring that our work aligns with the ethical framework upheld as a registered counsellor under the ACC.3. Open-Ended Therapeutic WorkWith the psychological contract as an anchor, the ongoing sessions will provide a space to explore your experiences, whether they relate to recent events, historical memories, or future concerns. While we will work towards the goals identified in the initial consultation, therapy remains flexible, allowing for deeper exploration as needed.4. Ending & Closure of the Therapeutic RelationshipThe ending of therapy is client-led, with the timing of closure determined in accordance with your progress and needs. To ensure a meaningful and well-supported ending, a recommended closure period of 2, 4, or 6 sessions may be advised, depending on the depth and duration of the therapeutic relationship. The closing phase of therapy includes:
•Reviewing the key themes and progress made throughout the sessions
•Exploring thoughts and emotions around endings, which may bring up past experiences of both positive and unresolved endings
•Ensuring a reflective and meaningful transition out of therapy
Endings, while often overlooked, can be an important and insightful part of the therapeutic process.5. Post-Therapy ReflectionUpon completion of therapy, a client feedback form will be provided to gather reflections on the process and the experience.
